Can You Be Charged Without Being Arrested or Summoned to Court

Can you be charged with a crime (in my case shoplifting misdemeanor) without being arrested or summoned to court? I was detained in a store 3 mths. ago - I have not received a summons and was not arrested, just told by the store detective that I would be receiving a summons. I am up for a job and they are doing a CORI background check on me - since I have not been arrested or even been brought to trial (or summoned), will anything show up on my record? Thanks for your help.

If there has been no arrest or booking, there will be no CORI hit.

Thanks Carl - I finally decided to bite the bullet instead of worrying and I called the police department - charges were never filed! It's too long of a story to get into, but basically it was a very weird situation where none of the normal things were being done in terms of an arrest,paperwork etc. but the detective told me I would definitely be going to court. I can't say anything against him though - as I result I have been in agony the past couple of months and I have been 'scared straight' for lack of a better phrase. Thanks for your help, Linda
