How to Check Lawsuit History of a Client

I would like to check the legal background of a business; ie: previous lawsuits filed against, judgements, case details etc. The buisness I want to check is located in brooklyn ny. While I have come across some research systems online, such as LexusNexus, Westlaw, etc, I dont know which one would be best suited for researching a commercial business.

If you're concerned only about local lawsuits, check with the courts with jurisdiction over the area (state and federal) to see if there is litigation under the client's name. You can also check to see if there are any liens on file with the local government. There's no magic way to search everything.

WestLaw offers KnowX.com, which is a database of public records you can search on a fee-per-search basis. You can use that to explore what record sources you may wish to search. You can then either pay for KnowX or some similar service, or attempt to do the search yourself directly with the state agency responsible for the record.

If they are listed in D&B, you may wish to purchase their credit report.

Or you could pay an attorney's service in Brooklyn to search the court records for you. They would charge you per hour; be sure to check individual names of the company's president, CEO or whoever as well.
