Sued over credit card debt
I live in FL previously lived in NJ, my Mom told me I received a certified letter from the Superior Court of NJ and that I was being sued for over $14000, The original debt was from 2 years ago for about $6000 the rest is interest and lawyer fees. I live in FL can I be sued in NJ? I am married with 2 children and my wife doesn't work? Does anyone know what the laws would be in FL or would they go by NJ law even though I don't live there? Would hiring an attorney help me negotiate this before it goes to court? What is the SOL for credit card debt?

Old Credit Card Debt
If this is debt you incurred while in New Jersey then you can probably be sued there, and you may have agreed that you could be sued there in the contract for your credit card. You may wish to consult with a New Jersey lawyer to make sure that any appropriate objections are made to the manner of service or to jurisdiction.

Collection Action
If you have been sued, you need to answer or respond to the complaint in a timely manner as permitted by the governing court rules, or otherwise make an appropriate objection to the suit (e.g., service, jurisdiction or venue), or you will be defaulted.

civil suit
I have responed to the suit via cert. mail to both court and attorney.
I spoke to a debt settlement company and they told me I should wait for the court to respond before working out a settlement and anoth debt settlement company told me I should have them negotiate a settlement for me and said I should not wait for the court to respond, who should I listen to and what should I do now?
I really appreciate all your help.

why would you settle with them ? they obviously can't prove that YOU owe the alleged debt, or they would have YOUR information on file.

civil suit
I received a letter with a court date of Nov 16th 2005, should I go to court or try to settle with them before it gets to court?
