Ex-Husband's Credit Card Debt

I am trying to buy a house in Pennsylvania and was told my name needs to be removed off my ex husbands credit card even though he is paying it off. Realtor says I need proof that he will pay on his own. Can we just type an agreement that he will promise to pay the card off and take it to a notary so I can give it to the mortgage company as proof?

If your ex would be willing to sign an agreement that he will pay off the card, would he not be willing to have your name removed from the card? Are you a jt. acct. holder or an authorized user on the card? An authorized user would normally not be responsible for the debt. Is there anything in the divorce decree that he would pay off the credit card debt? If your ex-husband is willing, you can ask the mortgage co. if they will accept a signed agree. that ex would be responsible for the credit card debt. The mortgage co. may still be concerned that he will not live up to the agree. & credit card co. will come after you for payment.

If this is about your debt-to-income ratio, no side agreement will fix that. As Betty3 suggests, your husband can promise the world, but what protects the lender if he breaks his word and defaults? If the lender accepts the written promise, you're fine, but I wouldn't expect the lender to do so.
