Starting A Non-Profit Organization

I am looking into starting one where we would hold concerts to raise money for local charities. We would ask for a donation at the door and pay the bands 40%, the charity, 40% and hold 20% for building maintainence and utilities. I am wondering as far as tax filing goes how we would list the payment to the bands? Is that just an expense?

There is a big difference between a "non-profit organization" and a "tax-exempt organization". Not all nonprofits are tax-exempt. Here's an overview of setting up a New York tax exempt organization. Is your organization already set up with your form 1023 approved by the IRS?

We haven't started any paperwork yet. We plan to try to set up as a nonprofit tax exempt corporation.
