Default San Diego Rental Unit "Conversion"

Hello, and I thank you in advanced for any insight you can give in this situation.

Last year we rented a unit on a month to month basis that was advertised as an apartment. About 5 months ago, the triplex was sold to a new owner. Last month we received a letter stating that the units were being converted and we were starting the 90 day right to refuse purchase.

From all the documentation I can find, it seems like they missed a few steps/hearings/notices in the process. I'm told that the units we are living in are technically already condos, but being rented as apartments. Shouldn't something have been disclosed in my rental agreement about this?

Also, by law do I have to give a 30 day notice to vacate the unit now that we're in the middle of this right to refuse purchase? We found another place that's ready to go in 15 days. We want to move there, but will we be responsible for the remaining 15 days?

I feel like we're getting so hosed here and am wondering if I have any rights.

If the units are already condos, what is the nature of the conversion?

If you wish to move early, talk to your landlord.
