Default Question for Aaron re. IAAL

Aaron, I think you indicated that you didn't want us to discuss the IAAL case here. At the time, he, or someone using the same screen name, was posting here. Now the individual that used that screen name is gone. So can we talk about it now?

From a legal standpoint, it is a timely topic of special interest to regular forum users.

I don't like the way one side is using the case to intimidate others by making it appear as though a user can be unmasked by the simple filing of a bogus complaint. There is of course, another side to that litigation and apparently, FA is not going to allow any discussion of that on their forum (I’ve posted things and had them erased). Thus I fear the general public is getting the wrong idea that the First Amendment has ceased to exist on Internet forums!

quaere, where did you get the idea you have any 1st amendment rights applicable to a forum such as FA or this one?

You don't. The owners have absolute censorship rights due to the fact they own the thing.

Do you think I can post a sign in your front yard complaining about something you don;t want advertised? Of course not.

Aaron, don't answer any questions until your lawyer is present! Do not, I repeat, DO NOT admit that you are the father of Anna's baby!

I'm probably the last one to know they found out who he is and that they finally got him into court.

I must say I will always appreciate IAAL's sage advice on taking the disgruntled and unruly teenager to some place south of the equator without telling him that he only had a one-way ticket. I kick myself for not saving that post.

All in all, I appreciate good board monitors who feel decency is important to the integrity of their forum.

After reading the story, the scanned documents- complaint, etc it didn't sound like it was a bogus complaint that led to the "unmasking". http://www.freeadvice.com/iaal/

The person harassed the administrator after their account was closed. The First Amendment doesn't protect the use of obscenity.

JK: when I speak of the First Amendment, I am not talking about what was said by IAAL. I am speaking of the right to remain anonymous. THAT is what his case is about. My apologies if it sounded like I meant something else.

First Amendment principles have been applied in all of the cases thus far regarding the “right” to remain anonymous when posting on the Net (regardless of where you are posting).

Bay: No, my threads (from yesterday in the “issues” forum) were both deleted.

    Country Living:

So do I. What I don’t appreciate is when monitors only care if THEY are treated with decency. I can appreciate any rules in any forum...as long as they are enforced consistently.

Deadlock: Can you find a viable cause of action within that complaint? If so, point it out!

    Just some food for thought!
