    Default Patient Confidentiality

I'm not sure if I'm in the right area but I post anyway. My 6 yr. old son and I have been in therapy for almost 6 months. I did sign some releases for them to talk to other ppl that we are involved in but I recently found out that one of tem have been calling our therapist to find out out appt dates and wen we show up and when we dont, including some things that I have told her. I do know about the patient confidentiality thing but can they do that with releases, especially to talk about what I say to her behind closed doors? This is making me really disguisted and I can talk to her about much anymore. I can understand if it was something to had to do with my kids and if I were neglecting them but thats not the case.

What information did you authorize to be released?

If you're not comfortable with the situation, inform your therapist that you are revoking the release.

I signed the release for emergency purposes only because I have no family nearby incase god forbid something would happen to me something could be arranged for them to contact family to take my kids. I'll be seeing her tomorrow and I will be doing what you said and looking for another place to go. I hate doing this but I need someone who I can talk to and let it ALL out without thinking that something I say will be repeated. Is what she did wrong?

Morally wrong? Possibly. Legally? If you authorized the release of that information through the release you executed, it would not appear so.

If you are not happy with your current therapist, check around for another (I believe you said you are going to do this) & let them know your concerns about confidentiality. Sometimes you have to "shop around" until you find a therapist you are comfortable with.
Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.
