Default Workers Comp Law in Maryland
Are contractors, whether they are general or subs required to have worker's compensation for 1099 independent contractors under them? I have a friend who is a sole proprietor and he is under the impression that it is required.

The MD link on this website talks about employers being required to have a policy for it's employees, but is my understanding that having 1099's are excluded. I would appreciate any feedback or references. Thanks.

As a general rule, independent contractors are not covered by workers compensation. Problems can arise if the workers are misclassified, and actually qualify as employees.
