Default Accident in borrowed car, uninsured and expired plates

My grandma went into a nursing home 3 weeks ago. A couple days later, my car broke down. She told me I could use hers. .... said everything was ok and up to date with it. I didn't reilize the plates were expired on it. I got pulled over for the expired plates to find out there was no insurance card in the car either. I got a ticket for both the the expired plates and no insurance.

So ...... I contact grandma. She cant remember where she thought she had insurance from. I called my uncle(since he handled many of her bills), he said she hadn't driven the car in a while and he wasn't certain if she even had insurance.

Upon finding this out, I bought the car from my grandma and had the title and all changed over to my name so that I could then purchase insurance on it too.

I drove all this information(change of title and registration as well as insurance card) to the police dept that gave me the ticket. They told me they would have dropped the ticket but it had already been sent out. I went to the courthouse to the county clerks office(as the police directed me to do) .... where they told me that they wouldn't drop the ticket and I had to go to court.

What should I do ? Do I need an attorney ? I work as a Paramedic on an ambulance and if the ticket holds up in court, I could lose my job(cause I wont be able to be put on my the ambulance insurance). I'm stressed out about the entire ordeal. Can someone please advise. This all happened in Illinois. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

You need to go to court to fight the ticket. Given the high stakes I would consider at least consulting, and probably hiring, a lawyer to assist you.
