Default What To Do When Starting A New Business

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give us.

My buddy and I have purchased a small part-time business, where we'll be screen printing shirts, creating designs, making stickers, signs, banners, etc...

We're green to many things at this point, but very excited. We're well aware that this may be a one time shot at the title for us, and we don't want to blow it, can't afford to blow it. Which leads to my question.

Can someone lay out a list of legalities we should be aware of, items to cover, items we may not be aware of? For example, we've gotten our Business License, and we're currently awaiting our Ficticious. What else do we need to cover our butts? Tax ID # right? Reseller's permit right? Anything else? Should we be an LLC, or? Things of that nature.

Please let us know anything you can, it would be greatly appreciated.

This list is for Maryland, but most of its content would apply to any new business. (The specifics, for example, of which businesses need professional licenses can vary from state to state.)

Thanks Aaron for the list. We're in California, I'm going to see if I can find a list that would apply, although, like you said, it's probably quite similar.

And be sure you and your buddy have an agreement prepared by an attorney. This may cost a few dollars up front but one day you will either be glad you did or bending over because you didn't.
