Demotion Due To Work-Related Injury

I was hurt on the job and had to have back surgery. During the 4 months I was off of work my store manager promoted someone to my position and now says that the only way I can continue working for the company is if I take a lower paying position. My salary will be half of what I made before and will cause extreme hardship. Is there any legal presedent to protect my rights? Do I have any rights? I have been released to return to work with NO restrictions and am able to fully do my job.
