J1 Overstay

Last summer I was on work and travel program for student.

I overstay for 6 days. I know, I made a mistake but what can I do now?

I would like to come back this summer again on same program but I am afraid that they will deny my J1 visa on port of entry.

Would it make any difference if I make a new passport with new passport number?

Please help me.
I am from Croatia.

If you apply for a J1 visa and aren't eligible due to the overstay, your application should be rejected. (That is, you wouldn't get the visa, and thus wouldn't be in a position to be turned back at the border.) You can try inquiring with CBP to see if you are subject to a period of exclusion.

So, if I get J1 visa from USA embassy in my country I don't have to be afraid of any consequence on port of entry because I overstayed last time?

Mistakes happen. I can't say that there's no chance that something would be overlooked when your visa application is processed and approved, but then be caught at the border. But it's a small chance. And you can provide yourself with additional assurance by checking with CBP in advance of any travel to the U.S.
