Can I expunge my restraining order to join the U.S.A.F.?

I'm starting the process of expunging my Domestic Violence Restraing Order in order to get back in the Air Force reserves. I was in the Air Force and finished my tour in 1985 with Honorable discharge, after seperating with my now ex-wife, she had gotten a restraining order put on me for verbal, terroristic threats, no physical violence, although, I quickly realized a threat is a threat and is judged by the court by a strict guideline.
My qustion is: The minimum time I keep seeing is 5 years to be able to try to get it expunged, has anyone had it expunged before the 5 years, or is it even 5 years, and if it's not 5 years how long is it?
Any info would be helpful.

You may wish to consult a family lawyer in the state where the restraining order was issued, to see if other remedies are available (such as having the trial court set aside the order, or otherwise void it).
