I am a 17 year old male New Yorker. I'd like to know if i can leave home without parental consent. I'd like to know all my options, as i turn 18 in august.I cannot entertain any more thoughts of biding my time for 6 months, for various reasons.

I have connections in Toronto, Canada, and I would be able to safely live there.I would come back to new york to pick up my trust fund money at 18.

What I was told by the parent coordinator at my school was that if i leave for toronto, the police will not come after me if i can convince them that i am in no danger, left of my own free will. I was told that i'd be deported back to the USA and sent to prison if i commited any crime, misdemeanor or felony(like i'd do that?)

If possible, I'd like to know the law and the actual enforced or unenforced policies.

The legal process to be emancepated woud take longer than the time before you turn 18. Running off is not a wise idea. Your parents have legal authority to you and could report you as a runaway. This could mean "anyone" taking you in could go to jail! Your best option is wait teh few month till you turn 18 inmeantime follow the rules save money etc.

She is legally responsiible for you! It would be in her (your Mother's) best interest (and yours) to report you as a runaway! Running off would not be a wise idea on many levels

You can't simply cross a border and take up residence in another country - or, at least, you're not supposed to. You are expected to follow that country's immigration laws. You could find yourself picked up, detained, and deported.

At seventeen, if you move out without consent and your parents acquiesce in your action by not trying to force you to return home, that would likely be deemed to be tacit consent for your moving out.
