Default Served with debt collection notice after four years
In August 2001, I transferred from my home state of Arizona to another location overseas as a result of my civilian employment with the US government. This transfer resulted in me moving out prior to my lease expiration, and I obtained a verbal "don't worry about it" from the local apartment manager.

Today, July 2005, I got a "debt collection" notice from the corporate parent of my old complex, in the amount of $778. It did not specify exactly what it was for, however it appears to be for the early departure prior to lease termination.

What is the statute of limitations on this stuff?

Suggested action?

Thanks

Default Arizona Statute of Limitations
The statute of limitations in Arizona for enforcement of a written contract is six years (although an action for default of a lease contract is four years, so it depends upon the nature of the action). Depending upon state law, your absence from the state may toll that period (i.e., keep it from running out).
