Default Payback to workmens comp after suing company responsible for injury
Texas. My husband has recently settled a case with the cleaning firm that caused his injury (slip & fall). He was on workmen's comp for approximately 9 weeks and reimbursement to him totalled about $5,000 (or less) and he returned to work after his recovery. His atty says we owe workmen comp $18,000 from our settlement. Why would we have to pay this when 1) he didn't receive that much in compensation, and; 2) his employer paid the workmen's comp through his employment policy? Appreciate any advice on this.

Perhaps he incurred $13,000.00 in medical bills?

Have his lawyer find out the basis for the amount, and try to negotiate a lower payoff.
