Unhappy Wage garnishment and statute of limitations
Ok, my question is what can i do to protect myself from the blood-suckers? They are threatening to start garnishing 15% of my (measly) wages (or I can pay $250/mo for 9 months, which i can't afford). What can I do? I can't afford that? I was unemployed for nearly 2 years...and I'm actually only working a temp job!
I read somewhere that in Wash. state they can't garnish your wages if you've recently been unemployed--does anyone know if that's true in California?
Also, my loans are quite old...is there a statute of limitations on these things? or do they plan to harass us all the way into the next world?!

Default Re: Help! Wage garnishment? statute of limitations?
You indicated elsewhere that these are federally guaranteed student loans, so there probably no statute of limitations which applies. Did they get a judgment against you, or is that what they are threatening to do?

No judgment. They also are refusing to negotiate at all on the required payments of $232./mo for 12 months to avoid garnishing my wages.
Also, I was unemployed for the past year --which I read somewhere precluded them taking my wages..but they brushed that argument off...
(and actually only in a temp job!)

They are GSL loans...Sally (&*#) Mae was the orignal lender. This outfit --Van Ru--was contracted by the DOE to collect on defaulted loans.
