    Default Undercover Work

    Hello,
I'm just a civilian who is trying to get even with some people by bringing to light my non-friends' criminalities. I intend on doing this by using e-mail under a false identity so as to obtain confessions in text form. Is it legal for me to do this? Will a state attorney prosecute on the basis of e-mail evidence obtained in this manner? Note: I reside in Gainesville, FL.
    Thanks!

I doubt that it would be illegal, but wouldn't give a firm answer without knowing exactly what you intend to do. Whether a prosecutor would want to rely on an email confession? That would depend upon factors including other available evidence of guilt, how easy or difficult it would be to prove that the suspect in fact authored the email, and the seriousness of the criminal conduct.

Thank you for your prompt response. As ridiculous as it probably seems, my motive is to find out whether such people are involved in organized crime, in particular, that of murder. You see, I came to realize that insane people are immune to the death sentence for the most part, and that organized crime may take advantage of that by using them as hit people. In my e-mail correspondences, I am assuming the identity of the insane person. If this interaction confirms my suspicions, for the safety of others, I want to make sure that those who are involved get prosecuted.

Seacube, you might want to report your claim on the website for the FBI. It has an complaint form for internet crime. If you are aware of the crime you can report it and the email that identifies the persons identity.

They will investigate and let you know they have received your concern and they will provide the results of their investigation.

Do not expect anything from that site. I sent them the name, address, phone numbers and every bit of relevent information on a guy that has ripped off over 100 people and businesses in internet schemes and scams.
Never got a reply back from them, called feild offices and no one has ever heard of the guy.
The local police, in California { where he lives} arressted the guy on similar charges and the FBI was notified of that occurance, by me and they still have not done anything. It has been over three years now.

Only report to the FBI internet crime site if you have absolutely nothing else to do, are completely bored, or you just want to see how nothing gets done.

Maybe I missed seacube's question. I though seac was going to obtain information by using a false identity about a crime of murder. The question, I thought was if it was legal to do that. And I suggested reporting the undercover activity to the FBI who would then have the person's email. They would investigation the confession on email.
