Married and Seeking a Divorce

I'm a 23 year old woman in the State of New Jersey, I married an man from Burkina Faso(Africa) we were together for 4years before we got married in June of 2005. The marriage is not working out and I want a divorce. He came to this country on a student visa and already completed his education and is currently a civil engineer. I know that in the past he consulted an attorney to get citizenship but I never signed any documents to help the matter. I want to know can he be granted citizenship? what happens now because I want to file for divorce this month. I don't know what to do and I don't want him to gain citizenship through me.
