Recourse for Slander or Character Defamation

In the last few weeks an ex-gf confronted a friend in the employee parking lot where she stated that she felt I was stalking her (my ex). My friend told her that I wasn't but she didn't want to hear it.

A week or so later I was told by a close friend that she and her current boyfriend told a mutual friend of ours that she blackballed my application at the company where she works by saying "applicant XXXX is stalking me".

No official charges have been filed against me so I have no way of clearing my name. In the short amount of time it seems that she's on a PR campaign to spread this accusation. Is there anything that I can do to stop this ugly chain of events from continuing? I live in Ohio.

"Heard it from a friend who... heard it from a friend who... heard it from another...." What economic harm did you suffer from not getting that job? Do you have any direct evidence that she has made any such statements to a person other than the friend from the parking lot?
