I rear-ended someone a few weeks ago. At the time, the person who I hit only asked for my name and number. I gave it to him, assuming it wouldn't be a huge issue...there wasn't much damage to my Neon, and he had a huge pickup truck. Well he called me and told me it was $1,200 worth of damage to his truck. I told him I'd call him back with my insurance information. WELL I learned my insurance has lapsed. So I figured, he doesn't have my insurance information, doesn't know where I live or work...any of that, so to hell with it. I only have a cell phone...it's not easily traceable. And it's now about 2 months after the accident...and now he's calling me saying he's going to go to the police. But I've been ignoring his calls.
Is there anything the police is reasonably going to do? It seems to me they're not going to get involved at this point. If he was that concerned about the accident, the guy I hit should have filed a police report to begin with. At this point I could tell police he hit ME. In any case, it seems like it would be a civil issue at this point--he could take me to small-claims court, but that's about it. Am I right?
I know I'm not being the most honest person, but I can't afford to pay for it.. and his insurance is mostly paying for the damage. I just don't want the police showing up at my door.
