You received one message from a person you don't know and.... you think you can prosecute that person for harassment? Well, I'm sure you can find the police department if you want to file a complaint.

What do you imagine to be the basis for a lawsuit, and what do you imagine your monetary damages to be?

Realistically? Exactly zero. They'll tell you the same thing FaceBook will tell you: learn how to make use of the extensive features of your privacy preferences.

As stated, probably zero. It's unlikely any crime has occurred in your unnamed state, and they will probably make the suggests aardvarc provided: change your privacy settings.

On the right side of your screen will be three things: Your name. Home. And an arrow. Click the arrow. Scroll down to PRIVACY SETTINGS. Click that. Scroll down....and there is a spot where you can block a person

I think that "zero" may be overstating the likelihood of getting legal help here. You need facts about who and where they are before you can get law enforcement interested in this sort of thing. Flag the message for review by facebook and maybe they will shut down the account.

Messages akin to "I'd like to bang you" isn't going to get action from any law enforcement agency. There's no threat and a single message won't constitute harassment in any jurisdiction. FaceBook might care, they might not. Police are going to yawn.

I had a person harassing me, and did go to the State Police. Difference is - this was a friend I have known since High School, who knew where I lived, my cell phone number, home phone number, etc.

A quick little note to him "Harassment by Telecommunications is illegal in the state of Michigan, have no further contact with (me), any questions call (State Police Department, Sgt, phone number).
