Lender Tried to Get Money But Car Seller Claims Loan Was Paid Off

I bought a car from someone. This person lost the pink slip. So i went to the dmv and they told me the car had a lien hold. I contacted the leasing company and told me the person who i bought it off owed money. They told me the person owed about 1800 but that if i payed $650 they would sign it off for me. The owner said she never owed money. for 5 months the company asked for money and they wouldn't show me or the owner any paperrwork. finally recently the owner found the pink slip it is stamped and signed off. is this fraud by the lease company for trying to get me to pay money that wasnt owed? what can i do? and is it best if i get a lawyer? please help, thanks!

also they gave me all these excuses after i told them i had the pink that they have to double check and that it might of been a confusion because it was so long ago that its in the storage. i dont believe it, if the file is in the storage how do they know moneys owed if they dont have the files on hand? i wasted five months with this issue and im not fond of them trying to rob me of my money.
