Default Switched Prices at Sam's Club

    Hi,

I went to sam's club and found a laptop and wanted to buy and check it for couple weeks...not really intended to buy. I took the laptop box and put it on my cart. I noticed there was a litle sticker hanging on it...i just pressed it so that it stick to the box..sombody put the sticker of other item on this box(not me)..I purchased couple other things and went to check out..they scanned the items and paid using my debit card. I noticed that the laptop which is actually $1100 is scanned as $79.99 because the sticker or the bar code on top of the carton box was from s different item...I came home. I am thinking what to do...I didn't do anything. They can track me down easily using my membership number..What should I do..go return the item or wait until they find it out..is it considered a shoplifting..I never shoplifted anything...I'm a decent person...I'm kind of tempting to take little risk.what's your take on this..please advise...

    Thanks,
    stalin-michael

I don't have any advice, but I have a question. Why would you do that?

This sounds similiar to another thread on this forum involving computers and member clubs.

Think about this logically. If you were not stopped in the store how can they find out that you purchased a laptop for cheap?

First each item has a Universal Product Code (UPC). That UPC is specific to that set of items. If the Laptop had UPC of 1234 but it rang up as Apples at 9999, how will they know that? They won't. When they look at your transaction, it will have your membership number, all the items you purchased, such as Apples 9999. It wont say Laptop 1234 rang up Apples 9999. Even if they pulled the video (I seriously doubt that they will due to the volumne of transactions) they will not be able to tell what item you had. (Yes, Sams Club has video).

That aside, why risk it? Why do something stupid that can haunt you for the rest of your life? Retail theft, or retail fraud will mess your life up if convicted. Return the item to the store, explain that it rang up wrong and move on with your life. Offer to pay the difference, or not. Do what will help you sleep at night. Search this forum for the other computer scam at a warehouse. The perp returned it and was able to move on with their life....

    Bam,

Thanks for the quick reply. When they find out that a laptop is missing..they will see the camera installed in electronics dept. and can see that i was loading the carton (it was a big box because it was laptop+printer in one bundle) into my cart and also they can see that i was pressing the bar code which was stuck loose on top. Once they know the date and time..they can easily findout who am i using the membership number...My question is..is it a crime? Can i take a chance and escape from being charged when they come after me? How good are their survielence camera's...Thx

So sorry, Stalin. I misread your posts. I thought you were switching prices on the merchandise. My mistake. Forgive me?

That's OK...Pl. advise..I know you guys mighe have see more of these than any other being active on these forums..ur advise will be valuable..i'm kind of inclined little bit towards returning the laptop to Sam's by saying that it was scanned incorrectly...But you know... sometimes i feel like it's $1000 and not my fault...so let's keep it...
