Benefits for Long Term Contractor

My question involves labor and employment law for the state of: New York & New Jersey.

Hello,

I was working as a contractor ( Software engineer ) at a leading financial company in New York city and Central NJ for around 8 years.
From Oct 2004 to July 2012. In my last day at the company, at 5 PM, my contract was terminated with immediate effect without any prior notice. I was not told any reason why my contract was terminated.


Please advice if I can claim any benefit for my long tenure in the company.

If you were an independent contractor (i.e.: self employed), if you have any recourse would be based on your contract. If your statement of "any benefit" is referring to unemployment insurance, then no as they would not have paid into the UI fund since you were an independent contractor.
