Why Do You Need to Register As an Offender

My question involves criminal records for the state of: Illinois and Michigan

What crimes or offenses does one need to commit and be convicted of that require them to register? I keep seeing sex offender come up when I search it and I am wondering if that is the only crime one has to register for. Also can something like that fall off a criminal record? Thank you

Sex offenders have to register in accord with state law, because that's what is legally required. The duration of registration and what steps, if any, are available to shorten that period vary by state and usually also by offense and/or a rating of the offender's dangerousness or chance of recidivism.

Criminal records are forever. Depending on state law, the offender may or may not have to continue to register, may or may not be able to have his record expunged, and there may or may not be a point at which employers are no longer privy to the information. But once it's on your record, it never completely goes away.

And no that is not the only registry. Illinois also has the violent offender against youth registry and the murderer's registry.
