Default Suing Over an Attack, Broken Teeth

My question involves an injury that occurred in the state of: New York

I was recently attacked in a parking lot and broke some of my teeth, i didn't know who attacked me initially but his ex girlfriend messaged me and said her ex boyfriend told her that he attacked me, she even sent me the txts messages with him saying it was him.

i now have his name... what should i do?

i'm not sure how to go about getting him to pay for the damages

If you made a police report of this incident, you follow up with the detective with your new information.

If you haven't made a police report, you do so.
I'm not a lawyer, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night.......
