My question involves guardianship in the State of: SC, MI
Hi,
My husband and I have been married for four years. He has two girls from a previous marriage, which he has sole custody of. They see their mother, in MI, as agreed upon during the summer.
The girls are with me every day, all year long. I handle everything from school registration to medical visits. It is hard to always have my husband around to help with that stuff because he is in the military. That's just on a normal day. However, if he is tdy or deployed, he has the base lawyers write up a POA so that I have no trouble with legal stuff since I'm only a step-parent. I know that in the eyes of the court, I am just the woman married to the girls' father. However, we were wondering if there was any way to get a guardianship of some kind set up so that if he can't leave work, etc., that I will always have the legal right to handle, at the very least, medical or legal issues.
I am not trying to take any remaining rights away from the mother, it just seems that it would be much easier to have a regular POA or guardianship lined up so we don't have to worry about it.
Is this a possibility?
