Assault Over a Year Ago, Being Charged Now

My question involves criminal law for the state of: MD.
I assulted a guy in June 2011. I'm not 100% sure the exact date, but i'm pretty sure it was a few days/weeks prior to the 15th. what happened was, we were working construction, and ALL of our crew INCLUDING him smoked a little weed that day. well, he was being all lazy and standing around, so we were goofing on him. he singled me out and instigated a fight. i did not touch him first, he hit me a few times before i laid my hands on him(caught on Video and i have witnesses). we were both fired, and i though that was the end of it.
but nope, on the 26th, a sherrif came to my door serving me papers. i'm being charged w/ sec degree assult

i have a court date set next month the 17th. i'm getting a public defender. i'm prepared to go to jail, county jail isn't that bad maybe 18 months i could do.(or the FULL ten year sentace or $2500 fine my papers say, who knows).
my problem is, is there a statue of limitations on everything? its been over a year and nothing was ever done after he got a normal a** kicking.

the only thing that happened was he was running his mouth provoking me and i reacted. i have no shame in saying that but obviously he did since he is doing this. he sued the company he worked for, his own uncle, and now is going after me. itspointless but i'm used to it. i was never arrested and they never took a statement from me so idk what is going on. i've never had this happen. ive only ever been arrested nd in trouble so i know how that works
