Child Support Collected Twice by 2 Agencies

My question involves child support in the State of: New York

Hi,

I have a question about child support collection in Nassau County.
I have always been paying child support on time to the child support enforcement agency. Now I have been charged also by the sheriff department, for the same amount and for the same reason. If I talk to each one of the agency they tell me what I am paying to the other agency is probably something other than child support and don't realize I am paying twice at every paycheck. I don't have the money to hire a lawyer to go to court to have this matter clarified.
Does anybody know how I can solve this issue?

I am not aware of any state that has Sheriff's Departments obtain garnishment orders for child support, and I see no exception to that rule for New York. Further, a garnishment order must be issued by a court - they can't do it on their own - so your employer would have received a garnishment order which you could also find in the court file. Ask your employer for copies of the orders served upon it, or go to the courthouse and look at the orders in your file, and perhaps you'll be able to figure out what is happening.

So the sheriffs department tells you that your money that is going to the child support enforcement agency is for some thing other than child support?
That doesn't sound right to me, and if your on time I don't understand why you would be charged twice, this post is interesting , hopefully someone knows the answer
