My question involves defamation in the state of: WV
I am a faculty member teaching in the area of Graphics and computer design in WV. I have been in this profession for about 8-10 years, and have a respectable and leadership oriented position within the institution and the community. About a year ago, a student from my program pointed out to me that upon searching my name in Google, he found a public listing on one of Yahoo's services, where the user, claiming to be me (my name is fairly unique), has posted some abusive language in response to a technical question in the field that I teach in and am supposed to have expertise in. I looked into this, and found to my horror, that the article was one of the first few to open on the Google search page, if my full name was searched. It shows up on the front page, and the abusive language is displayed within the search result itself. I have tried repeatedly to contact Yahoo about this, I have reported abuse, however, they have failed to take any action to remove it. Such public listing falsely claiming to be me, and clearly pointing to my area of expertise, is extremely sensitive to my professional and personal reputation. I am very upset, because this is causing a lot of public disgrace to me, as in my profession many incoming and current students search for faculty to get contact information, reviews etc. I would like to consider filing a suit, however, I have no idea who to approach or how I could challenge as big an entity as Yahoo. Please help.
