Default Damage to Vacation Rental Cottage

My question involves a consumer law issue in the State of: Maine

I stayed in a cottage in Maine this past weekend for a couple of days. The cottage owner called after I checked out and claims that the kitchen floor is burnt a little due to a hot pan and I did it and that I need to pay for getting a new kitchen floor. She said that she noticed it a day before I left and didnt want to spoil the party and thought of telling me during check out.

Now, what do I need to do? I do not know the extent of the damage as I stay in CT and its impossible for me to drive up there and sort out the options. Wont her insurance pay for it? Do I need an attorney to defend my case in the court of law? Please advise. Thanks!

Ask her to send you a photograph and the estimates.

At most you're liable for the depreciated value of the flooring, not the full replacement cost (unless it was new when you / your guests caused the damage).

If you are sued and you wish to do so, you may hire a lawyer to represent you.
