Property Left by Roommate Over 3 Years

My question involves personal property located in the State of: California

My former roommate was mentally ill and left our shared home without notice approximately 39 months ago. At that time, her father asked if he could leave bags of clothing items and a plastic storage box full of items in my garage and I said yes. No one has contacted me the over 3 year period since she left about these items. I am now preparing to move. Are there any legal ramifications if I give these items to charity? Our rental arrangement didn't end well and I'd rather not attempt to get in touch with my former roommate or her father but I also don't want to incur any future legal issues. I've never opened the plastic storage box so I don't know what it contains but I believe it might be Christmas ornaments, if that matters. My landlord has told me just to get rid of them but again I'm wondering if I could be held legally responsible.
I realize I may be over thinking this but need some advice.

You agreed to store the items. You have given no indication to your ex-roommate or her father that you are unwilling to continue to store the items. So if you want to be sure you won't face any possible liability, you need to let them know what's happening and see if they want to recover the items.
