Default Promotional Offer That Turned into a Contract

My question involves a consumer law issue in the State of: North Carolina
In January 2012 a representative from AT&T U-Verse knocked on my door. I was offered a 1-year "promotional" offer for my home phone, cable & internet service. The phone service was horrible when I called to discontinue the services I was told I had to pay $188 to break the contract. I'm confused what contract? Did I misunderstand the word "Promotional? Or did I just get scammed?

You apparently didn't read what you were signing, I'm assuming you signed something. Promotional offers are often contingent on entering into a contract for a period of time, often longer than the promo lasts.

I didn't sign anything and I read through all the booklets. I accepted the installation and it was confirmed over the phone with a third party. Perhaps accepting the installation was the contract. I'll be more careful in the future.

Thank you for responding so quickly. Have a blessed evening!
