Default I Was Adopted As a Child and Want to Change My Last Name Back

My question involves name change laws in the State of: Missouri

I am currently 22. When I was about 5 my mom remarried and my step-father adopted me, giving me his last name. They got divorced about 6 years ago. I have no association with my former step-dad, and my biological father is back in my life permanently. He turns 40 in June and I want to try and surprise him by legally having it be as if I were never adopted. His last name, and his name back on my birth certificate. Is this possible? If so, is a month and a half enough time to accomplish this?

You can change your name legally as an adult, but in order for your biological father to appear on your birth certificate he would have to adopt you as an adult if your state allows for that (not all do, and some have restrictions).

A name change is possible (but frankly not likely) within 6 weeks depending on how busy the courts are, but an adult adoption would take quite a bit longer.

Speak with a local attorney; s/he will know the local climate and how quickly these things take.

I wasn't aware an adult could be adopted.

Speaking to an attorney is my next step. But being Sunday morning, in which most attorneys don't work weekends as far as I know, I figured I'd try the internet.

Thank you Dogmatique. You were very helpful.
