Default Laptop Stolen at My College While Proctor Was Present

My question involves a consumer law issue in the State of: My laptop was stolen from a class room while a proctor was in the room. I went to see the Dean and he told me to file a police report which I did. When I went back and showed him the police report he told me that there was nothing he could do. What recourse do I have, if any? Is there anything I can do to recover the cost of my laptop? It was a gift from my parents and I do not have the funds to replace it. This happened in the state of New Jersey. Thanks

file a claim with your homeowners insurance?

the proctor nor the school is liable for the loss. A proctor has no responsibility to safeguard your property. It is up to you to keep it safe.
I am not an attorney and any advice is not to be construed as legal advice. You might even want to ignore my advice. Actually, there are plenty of real attorneys that you might want to ignore as well.

did you have it insured, or do you have any kind of property insurance ie homeowners insurance, if so then file with them.
the school and any of its employees are not responsible for lost or stolen property, that is on the owner of said property to insure the items, some colleges do have insurance for this kind of thing but most do not.
