Who Qualifies to Be a Tourist Sponsor

I understand that during a tourist visa interview it is required to have things such as bank statements to prove that I have the funding to travel to the US and cover the expenses during my stay there. Well I don't have enough money personally to finance the trip to the United States so I must have a sponsor. I have friends and family in the United States, but it would be much easier to use a family member in my home country as a sponsor. Is this okay? Can I use my own mother (not in the US) as my sponsor or is it required to have a sponsor who is currently living in the United States? I've found it difficult to find information on who exactly qualifies to sponsor a potential tourist.

No. You must have a sponsor in the US, preferably someone who is related, but a very close friend who can present strong evidence that you will return home at the end of your stay is also acceptable.
