Default Simple assault
My friend was arrested with a simple assault charge from a altercation at a bar. This is his first offense ever, and it is only a misdameanor crime in our state. He plead not guilty to the charges. The reason the fight start was because my friends was surrounded by this guy and 7 of his buddies earlier that night. The pushed him a little bit and they pushed his wife. They were kicked out of that bar. When he went to another bar they were there and they were harrassing him again. He decided it was time to leave. When he was walking out, 2 of the guys from the first bar were getting escorted outside by the bouncers for starting a different fight. They immediatly seen my friend and started hassling him again and got up right next to him. When they were talking to him, they got hit by another guy. They arrested my friend for hitting him, and charged him with simple assault. My friend did not do anything and really is having a hard time with money so he cannot hire a lawyer. Should he just plea guilty to save money. The guys were severly intoxicated, and my friends face is probably the only thing they can remember from that night. He was told if guilty being his first offense it would probably be around a 700 dollar fine and thats it. A lawyer is going to cost him 1300. What should he do? Thank you.

Default Re: Simple assault
If he can't afford a lawyer he should consider requesting a court-appointed lawyer. I would never tell somebody to plead guilty just to save money.
