Proving the Gift of a Vehicle Without Transfer of Title

My question involves vehicle registration or title in the state of: Missouri

A friend of mine commited suicide in last year march. He wrote a suicidal note, that his car has to be given to me. I read the suicidal note in police head quarters last year. His grand father came to do remaining rituals and handed over the keys to me. The vehicle is with me. The title is also with me(My name is not there in it. Only his name is there) The number plate expired in november 2011. i dont want to leave the car like that. I tried contacting his grand father but he is unavailable. I am doing a busy job so i cannot see all the work.

My question is:

Is there any way i can get the car? I am in Illinois now.

Please suggest me. These days i am missing my friend and i am feeling guilty that i am not fulfilling his last wish.

This is not a gift, per se and the transfer process isn't the same (though it can be done that way)!

This page from the Missouri Department of Revenue should give you an idea on what needs to be done by the grand father.

You will have to get that done and get the vehicle titled in your name in Missouri first, then you can transfer the vehicle over to Illinois and have it titled in that state>
