Default Landlord Trying to Raise Rent on Illegal Apartment

My question involves landlord-tenant law in the State of: Connecticut

    Hello,
I have been living in an illegal basement apartment for almost 3 years. It is my boyfriend, my 6 month old daughter and I. The last 2 years I have been on an verbal, month to month lease. Out of the blue my landlord tells me she's raising my rent $250.
Being that this is an illegal place, can she do that?
If so, doesn't she have to give me a little more notice?
Can she try to evict me?

    Thanks!

The Connecticut resources I've found indicate that you're entitled to a full rental period's notice of a rent increase. So if rent is due on the 1st of the month, notice must be give no later than the 1st of the month prior to the date the increase rent is to take effect. (Notice of a rent increase given on or by April 1 can take effect on May 1, but starting on April 2 the notice would take effect on June 1).

If you receive proper notice of a rent increase and don't want to pay the increased rent you can (a) move, (b) negotiate, or (c) consider other options - such as a health or safety complaint. Note that if you establish that the unit is unlawful and it cannot be rendered lawful, you will ultimately have to move.
