Notified of a Policy 17 Years After the Person Died

My question involves insurance law for the state of: New Jersey

Okay this may seem a little strange. I'm not sure what to make of it. I received a letter today addressed to my dad at his address of 12 years ago. ?It came to my ouse because when he passed away all mail wa forwarded to me.
The letter was from an insurance company stating they were doing an audit of their accounts and it had come to their attention thatmy mother was deceased and they needd confirmation. My father was bneficuary. My mother passed away 17 yers ago. My father passed away 10 years ago. We never even knew a life insurance policy existed. If this is legitimate, what is my next move. My father's estate was closed years ago.

Be wary of scammers. They are probably phishing for personal information they can use to create an identity or defraud you of your hard earned money.

It looks like the letter came from a reputable company. The address and phone number even the fax numbers all match when I did a search of this company. Very odd after 17 years.

Some of these companies scan state-generated lists of unclaimed property, then try to get a commission from the person they notify for letting them know how to make a claim. There's nothing wrong with that - but sometimes it's really easy to find the property yourself and avoid their fee.
