Widow Benefits - Not Enough Credits

Hi, my father passed away in January 2012 (age 63). He was actively working at the time of his death. My mom is 60 years old and is a US citizen. She has 2 children but none of them are minor. She was denied survivor benefits since my father had accumulated only 32 credits at the time of his death. Is my mom not eligible for any benefits due to lack of credits? My mom was completely dependent on my father for both livelihood and medical benefits. Any help or guidance would help a lot. Thanks.

Nothing can be done. A minimum of 40 credits, about 10 years of work, is required for widow's or retirement benefits for the rest of her life.

If she is disabled and low income, she could apply for Supplemental Security Income. All of her assets and income would have to be reported and verified. It can be a pretty restrictive program since it is designed to keep individuals from starving or being homeless.

SSI eligibiity is predicated upon disability. If you aren't disabled and aren't of retirement age, as far as the Social Security Administration is concerned you can get a job.

She can file without being disabled at age 65 and qualify on the basis of age and limited income and resources.

If she is not disabled, it means she should be able to work now, perhaps a simple, repetitive job.
