Default Bank Lost My Information- Where Do I Stand

My question involves data protection act for the state of:

I applied for the select current account with NatWest online and received a letter after couple of days later advising me take my ID's to the local branch and they will set-up my account.

On 13th February i went to the branch and provided them my copy of passport along my proof of address, and they told me they will be sending my application and ID'S to the head office and will get my new bank card and pin within 10 days.

I never received any card or any update regarding the account so i contacted to the customer service and they confirmed never received anything, Today i went to the branch to ask them about my account, they told me my post has been lost and the head office never received that.. and they cannot file a complaint because i am not a Natwest customer yet...

I am worried if they lost my information then it could be used by anyone .... who finds it. where do i legally stand and what should i do.

    please advice.

NatWest is in the UK - the forum deals with US law only, sorry.
