Unhappy School bill in collections which I cannot afford to pay
In fall of 2005, I started full-time classes at college. I had full financial aid covering my tuition and books. Total cost was $1,800 dollars. Halfway through the semester, my mother was diagnosed with lymphoma and because i had to take care of her, and bring her in and out of doctor's offices and hospitals, my academic progess declined, and I had no choice but to go talk to an advisor. I went to the Student Advisors Office, and i spoke to someone there about my situation and told them i could no longer continue going to my classes so she advised me to withdraw and had me fill out the withdrawal forms. I later on found out that because i had withdrawn, that my financial aid had been canceled and that my tuition bill of $1800 needed to be paid in full. The bill was sent to collections, and just before this summer, i had settled with the collections agency to pay $20 a month. I worked all summer only to pay bills, and daily expenses. I have another medical bill that im paying, and i pay for my own car insurance, gas, and food expenses. I am starting school again this fall, at a different college, and im not getting full financial aid, which means i have to pay for classes and books. $1800 is much to pay for, i dont have that kind of money, nor have i ever seen that kind of money. Is there anything i can do about this. I need this off my chest, i cant pay it. I have to put my money towards my school. Not throw it all away to this collections bill. Pleas, any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

It's a rhetorical comment to the effect of, if you don't pay your bills somebody else has to pick up your slack. It's not an answer to your inquiry.

There is a high probability that your student loan is not dischargeable in bankruptcy (absent extraordinary circumstances) and not subject to a statute of limitations. You haven't given enough information to answer that with certainty, but that's probably the case, so you'll probably end up paying it eventually (perhaps with substantial costs, interest, and legal fees added to the total).

Maverick, you are now $2552 in debt.

Last fall you dropped out of school and are requesting information about how to skip out on your loan for $1800. It has gone to collections. Was it a Stafford loan? What does it say about your loan when you withdraw? Are you resuming your studies at the same college? If not what did you answer when application asks about previous student loans? Ask your advisor about loan forgiveness.

Winter 2006 you injured your knee, went to an ER and now have a $475 bill that has gone to a collections agent. When you got to the ER they asked you for an insurance card. What did you tell them about your coverage? If you don’t have insurance I am sure they had you sign papers for treatment and payment of the same without the benefit of medical insurance. $475 for a trip to the ER is very cheap. What did they do to your knee?

Your mother drove your car and forgot to put her handicapped decal on your car? You went to your car following morning and saw it parked in a handicapped space without the decal. (I assume you live in the same building.) Her car now parked in space not specifically for handicapped drivers? You called the court, and the “secretary” said that you have a court appearance scheduled? or did she say you could drop in whenever? I think you have 10 days to respond to the citation. If you have not paid anything on a $276 fine over a month old it is difficult to predict as you may have to pay the fine as well as court costs. The court is the "collections agent"

Talk to creditors before they send your bill to collections. There is a price for being irresponsible.
