Can Two Collection Agencies Report the Same Debt

My question involves collection proceedings in the State of: California.

I recently received a copy of my credit report and noticed that two collection agencies are reporting for the same cable account. Can they do this? How would I go about settling this?

Credit Management Company, Reported: 12/2008, Assigned 12/2008, For: Cable- Time Warner, Amount: $122, Account Status: Closed
CBA Collection Bureau, Reported: 12/2009, Assigned: 08/2009, For: Cable-Time Warner, Amount: $122, Account Status: Closed

Should I call the collection companies or write them a letter? I'd like to settle this but I don't feel that I should have to pay twice for one account.

You should only have one report for the debt. You can dispute the double-entry with the CRA.

Thank you. I did send a dispute letter to all three CRA's and Equifax responded that these were valid and were reporting as separate entries, Experian responded that they couldn't process my request because I didn't include a copy of a bill, a copy of my driver's license or my SSN and a listing of my previous addresses for the last 2 years. However, I included a copy of the report I received from them that has the information they need. Transunion has yet to respond.
