Transmission Problems Starting While Car Was In the Auto Shop

My question involves a consumer law issue in the State of: CA.

I took my car to the auto shop for an oil change and smog. When I came back to pic it up it wouldn't go into gear. Due to something with the clutch of the car when they took it all a part to see the problem, they fixed it. Do I still have to pay for the work done on my clutch since it was working when I left it there?

How is it their fault that your clutch failed? What are you suggesting they did, other than possess the car at the time the "something" at issue finally wore out?

Of course you have to pay for the repair of the clutch. The clutch has nothing to do with an oil change or a smog check.

Now after having your oil changed and the cars motor seized 10 miles down the road from the shop, you then discover the shop installed the wrong size oil filter letting all the oil drip out of the motor, you have a claim.
