Default Can You be Charged With Bigamy For Marrying Somebody Who is Not Yet Divorced

My question involves a marriage in the state of:Philippines
Can an American be charged with bigamy for marrying a Filipno who is not annulled?

I met a Filipino online and we liked each other and talked for about 3-4 months. She told me she was married but could get her name deleted. I didn't know anything about Philippine law so I believed everything she said. She said that when I got there that if I paid a lawyer 160,000 Pisos we could get married while I was there. So I did. But then he wanted more money so I said no and figured something was wrong. But we had already gotten married. Can I be charged for bigamy

I am not aware of any U.S. jurisdiction in which bigamy can be charged against the spouse who is eligible to marry. The crime is to get married when you're already married. If you identify your state as instructed, somebody may point you to the relevant statute.

If you're asking about laws in the Philippines, I can't help you with those.

First of all it was a mistake to marry someone you just met in the internet. I am a filipino myself but doesn't agree to the fact that a married woman will be online surfing for another relation. That gives you an idea what type of a person this woman is. Its a business transaction where both the husband and the wife are both using you for money. This is so common and if you agreed to the terms of marrying if she's already married you are guilty by association. A bigamy charge only applies to the married person and not the person they married afterwards. FYI, that is the law anywhere. If I were you get out of that mess. The filipino women will use their looks to get money. Your best defense is, that your the victim. We're not all the same and to hear something like this, sickens me. If it involves money, trist that its a scam.
