Default Choosing Between Using a Public Defender or Hiring a Lawyer

I need advice on my case, should I go with a public defender, or hire a private lawyer. This past monday I was arested on a bench warrent, and taken to court for my petie larceny araignment. The thing is I never recieved a summons in the mail or in person. I was released on ror, and my probation officer said that because it is my first time getting in trouble I should probably just go with the public defender, he seems to think that I will probably get a fine and then have to be on good behavior for 6months then it will be whipped away from my recoard, also a buddy of mine who knows quite a few people in the police department also says that a detective that knows the details of the case seems to say the same, I hope this is true. Will a Public Defender be good enough. I know I am guilty and I accept that and I know why I did it and am willing to pay restitution for what I have done, but pray to avoid jail I made a mistake and I know I must pay for it, but should I worry about more than a fine and the 6 month good behavior. Please I realy need as much advice as possible. By the way I am in NY. If you want more info on the incedent you can read my previous post. http://www.expertlaw.com/forums/show...3407#post43407 The hearing is sept 8th thanks

With it being your first offense, and everyone telling you not to worry, I don't know if I would go through paying alot of money for a defense attorney. It is entirely up to you though!

I'm with turbo, use a PD. First offense won't be too harsh, pay the fine and the 6 months will fly by....you'll be OK.
