Can Guardians Who Have Temporary Custody Gain Full Custody Without Biological Parent

My question involves guardianship in the State of: Virginia

Is it possible for family members who have been given temporary custody of children to gain full custody without the father's consent (the mother has not seen the children since they were toddlers) I have a friend who has been told he no longer has custody of his children and has no legal right to make decisions regarding their care, education, basically he has no rights to his children. Is this possible??

It depends on what exactly happened. You say "no longer" , implying that he did have some sort of custody. How/why did the relatives end up with temporary custody?

Perhaps if you (or he....) could explain the situation, we may be able to offer some insight.

He was granted full custody by the courts and he later signed over temporary custody because he had to go out of town to work so that he could provide for the children. I'm not sure how long he was gone but when he came home he was told that the family members had gained full custody.
